Wisconsin small business health insurance regulations

Wisconsin health insurance companies must sell small group health insurance to any qualifying small business. Also, small businesses of more than 2 but less the 50 must be offered the same Wisconsin small business health insurance policies that are sold to other small businesses.

To qualify, your company must meet minimum participation requirements set by your Wisconsin health insurance company. Unless you meet the minimum level of participation your Wisconsin health insurance company requires, your policy can be terminated.

In addition to this provision, Wisconsin health insurance companies do not have to sell small business health insurance if the employer is unwilling to pay for a portion of each employee's premiums.

On the subject of price, Wisconsin health insurance laws impose some limits. For one, Wisconsin health insurance companies are prohibited from basing the price of small business health insurance on the group's health. And, although companies can charge higher premiums for small business health insurance due to the group's age, family size, and geographic location, there are boundaries set by the state.

As with individual health insurance, illness can not be used as grounds for terminating Wisconsin small business health insurance.

Self-employed Wisconsin health insurance

Buying health insurance as a self-employed individual is treated differently by each state's health insurance laws. According to Wisconsin health insurance laws, self-employed individual can not purchase group health insurance if there no other employees.

A self-employed individual with other employees, of course, can purchase a Wisconsin small business health insurance policy.

However, self-employed people buying an individual health insurance policy are protected by the same laws as small businesses.

Furthermore, a self employed business owner can claim a percentage of health insurance premiums as a tax deduction. Depending upon the year, 70 to 90 percent of health insurance premiums can be deducted as an itemized deduction.
